They are very similar, but the 300 does get the upper hand in low-end torque and mid-to-top-end pull. Otherwise, the 250 is just as much fun to ride. More importantly, it has a smooth, friendly power delivery and a six-speed gearbox. The gearbox itself is exactly the same as that of the 500EXC, which is a favorite among desert racers.
